Why Conspicuous Consumption? In economics, its a term that describes the “keeping up with the jones’” mentality that people will spend lavishly on goods that up their status in their peers eyes. While many economists ostracize the situation as something antisocial and elitist that should be curbed through levying Luxury Taxes, I think its just the opposite– that we should be glad that we have such an economy that produces the trivial goods that bring us joy in life. I thought it especially appropriate when thinking about music; namely, the unspoken game to find that one ultimo-dope track to shamelessly plug to all of your friends.
