gogol bordello – “wonderlust king”

May 16, 2010 Leave a comment

New CD came out last month.  This is NOT off of it… but maybe it’ll peak your interest.  I haven’t taken a whole listen through the new CD so I don’t want to pass judgment just yet.

here we go magic- “fangela”

Sounds like a psychedelic Panda Bear and an upbeat Grizzly Bear. Folk-y but pop-y at the same time? Also sounds a LOT like Mazarin. Overall the sound is awesomeeee.

laura marling- “night terror”

Creepiest video ever. Anyway I’m seeing her this weekend in Norfolk! Her voice is so sweet and soft. She’s only 20 as of Feb 1! Before going single, she sung with Mystery Jets, The Rakes, and Noah and the Whale.

edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros- “home”

A cute and cheesy little folky song with both almost twangy male and female vocalists. Be sure to listen to it a couple times, at first it may not be too catchy but after a couple listens I’m sure you’ll have it on replay in no time.

beck – “nobody’s fault but my own”

January 20, 2010 Leave a comment

I started listening to Mutations, an album in the Beck catalog I haven’t really given a fair shot for some reason. Despite the fact the album won a Grammy, on the whole I don’t think it’s as good as his more bombastic works. This track is one of the stand-outs though;  definitely sounds like a soul-crushing warm-up for what would eventually become Sea Change.

fleet foxes- “blue ridge mountains”

This song begins like a lullaby, then turns into something like a letter being sung, and then picks up speed around 2:05 and is the jam (I can never come up with anything better to say about a song other than the fact that it is a jam). A good winter song.
