pretty lights – “i can see it in your face”

August 12, 2010 Leave a comment

When taken at face value Pretty Lights regurgitated this after consuming everything I like about electronic music; ranging from RJD2′s retro samples to deadmau5‘s banger sensibilities You can literally cop the bands entire discography for free from their website.

Kid Fresh – Winter in Shanghai mix

August 1, 2010 2 comments

The Russ Chimes mix was just the beginning. I’ll be posting every great mix that I have in the crate, in due time. Aren’t you glad you asked.

Kid Fresh knows what’s he’s doing; he knows exactly what he’s doing. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said of the internet’s electronica community: this mix can’t be downloaded anymore (as far as I know), so I’m burning my own bandwidth for this one.

Fresh, apparently in Shanghai at the time, forged this mix back in 2008. It’s a little dated, but it hasn’t lost its punch. On every listen, I have some new gem thrown hard at my get-down bone. Fresh’s sample material runs the gamut; he pulls and splices from glitchy dance tunes, shaky indie classics, and dense house rumbles that sound hot off some Brooklyn operating table. This mix isn’t as homogeneous as Chimes’. At points in the mix, Glock shots are interspersed with snare drums.

If internet prose doesn’t entice, here’re a few of the artists included:

  • Hot Chip
  • Massive Attack (their Bristol-sound standard, “Unfinished Sympathy”)
  • LCD Soundsystem
  • Crystal Castles
  • Justice
  • The Rapture

I was sold when I heard, near the beginning of the mix, the Chinese twang of a girl chanting, over and over,

We think you’re a joke
so shove your hope
where it don’t shine.

Put it on at your dorm party. Put it on at your beach party. Put it on when you’re driving around, windows hidden, on a breezy night; the stoplights will appreciate it. Most of all, put it on when you’re drinking yourself stupid at your desk.

deadmau5 – “arguru”

July 23, 2010 Leave a comment

I’m getting increasingly hyped to see Deadmau5 play a set this weekend, and this is becoming one of my favorite deeper cuts off of Random Album Title. Lord knows what the title of the song actually means, but it sounds like something Richard Nixon would say when he’s dissatisfied. I’ll dance to that.

lcd soundsystem – “you wanted a hit”

June 1, 2010 Leave a comment

LCD Soundsystem, despite me being late to the party on them, is too big for me to get away with posting one of their singles and acting like it’s fresh tunage. I’ve been really getting down with You Wanted A Hit, a deeper cut off of their most recent album. It runs at a slow burn; but it’s worth the 9 minutes it will take from you.

edIT- “straight heat”

Damn just caught a hold of this and I gotta say I can dig. The whole album “Certified Air Raid Material” is a pretty good jam the whole way through also, but this song has a nice flow to it that is stuck in my head. I do have to stay it may get a little repetitive yet I am still jamming along. If you cop the album you also get a 48 minute mix from the group which is pretty dope. I would infer it gets the Dirt Nasty seal of approval and that does not come around too often unless your free-styling about the snow or the 80′s. Anyways check it.

deadmau5 – “i remember”

November 27, 2009 Leave a comment

Don’t let the album art fool you; I assure you this song is in no way associated with Crazy Frog, Gummibär, or any other European dancecore song that risks becoming a ring-tone fad in this country much to the pain and suffering of the public at large. I’m under the impression that Canadian DJ Deadmau5 (Joel Anderson) is known for his stadium-dance fare, but this is definitely something much more entrancing; somewhat akin in flavor to the Atlas Sound song I posted a few months back, albeit with a more pronounced beat. The result is something that Massive Attack would compose after making passionate, passionate love.
